HOW TO SET YOUR MINDSET RIGHT.
I wrote this article to inspire you, the reader, to learn how to set your mindset right; which is Setting your mindset in line with the standard of God for your life, the word of God.
When you set your mind on certain things, those things then become the important things and in a way they define what you do, see, hear or derive pleasure in. When you set your mind on material things, you will derive happiness in expensive material things like cars, clothes, shoes etc. When you value something and make it important, it becomes a standard that conditions your life, as well as, your thinking and actions. If your mind is set on success, you will not value anything that is less than that. This is the same when your mind is focused on getting married, you can marry anything because your Ultimate Goal is to marry, you will chess away anything which doesn’t look like marriage and only embrace the' marriage looking type'. I believe it is good to set priorities and targets in life, the only the danger is when these set targets limit God.
How you may ask?
For examples; you can tell yourself that for you to be happy you must have money, or living in a foreign country. You have told yourself that your husband is one that is a handsome hunk, who drives BMW, so when that handsome hunk comes up even if he doesn’t have those qualities such as being God fearing, responsible or modest, you will accept. Similarly, this affects your response to the men that come to ask for your hand in marriage; when a simple or not so handsome man approaches you, turn him down because to you that is not what you are expecting. You have set a standard for yourself and anything that is not within that set standard, they don't belong in your life. setting a standard in life shuts you to being open because your mind is so rigid to change.
My story:
"I reached a point in life where I was only interested in finishing school, settling down and getting that lovely Job. For me I only associated myself with people I thought had the same mind set as mine. I did whatever possible to get the kind of life that I imagined, I did not clearly state the role God was playing in it, it is like even when consulting him, I only went to him when I got stuck somewhere, maybe a hard test or failed scholarship attempt to study abroad. My simple plan was to finish my bachelor’s degree in September 2016, November, travel to Europe If and when I managed to get the scholarship and probably start life there. But then along the way I met the 'Master of Life', God himself. One who says in his word; “my plans (ways) are not your plans (ways)(1saiah 55:8-10), , seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you(Matthew 6:33)”.
I must say there is nothing wrong in having a structured Plan for your life, it is OK. The issues are:
Is that what God wants for your life?
In whose timing are all these things?
Is your plan in line with the word of God?
Where have you placed God in all these things?
I did not consult God or wait for him to give me feedback, I already planned out my life according to the standard set by people around me. to cut story short, I did not go to Finland nor get a scholarship to study for my masters abroad despite applying so many times. Also, I did not get that job I wanted, but I have a job and I love it, it has broadened my perspective on life and created so many opportunities for me, such as, travelling abroad once or twice and I know there is more that is coming. It took me time to realise that I needed to seek God in all that I do so that he can give me a specified direction of my life plan.
What is the standard of God?
The word of GOD planted and living in us. Even as you describe your future partner you describe him according to what the word of God says? As you tell God of the kind of career you want, you tell him according to what he has said in his word. There is nothing wrong with having a preference of choice in career, husband, wife, friends. It is Fine! but these must be in line with what the word of God says. Even in our daily prayers, we are to pray what the word of God says, when you speak the word of God to him, you are challenging him to do whatever it is that you wanted him to do. And in his word he has said in Mathew 24:35, “heaven and earth will pass away but my word will not pass away, Proverbs 30:5 “every word of God is pure, he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him”. Jeremiah 1:12 “he performs his words”.
So Set your mind right in line with the purpose and plans of God for your life, which is revealed in the word of God. Make the word of God a standard for your life and It shall direct you in all that we do.
How do you set the word of God a standard for your life?
Romans 12:1-2(NIV), says that "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2_Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will"
I believe you need to live a holy life, giving your life to God by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal lord and saviour. Thereafter, you maintain living a holy life by not conforming to the things of the world and by making the word of God a standard for your life.
Continually making the word of God a standard that guides your life and how you handle life issues. Remember the word of God has been given as instructions on how to live as Christians and it is there to offer guidance. The word of God is God himself (John 1:1), unveiling his promises to all believers. So continue to make the word of God a standard for our life and your mindset will never hinder any blessing that God has in store for you.
